Georgia’s 1st Congressional District

Disaster Recovery & Resilience
Hurricane vulnerability: The district’s coastal communities, including Savannah and Brunswick, are often affected by hurricanes and tropical storms. Recovery efforts usually highlight the need for stronger infrastructure. These include buried power lines, paved roads, and expanded broadband. This infrastructure is needed to reduce vulnerability.
Flooding & climate change: Rising sea levels and storm surges threaten the Sea Islands and marshlands. This puts housing, tourism, and ecosystems at risk.

Economic Drivers & Challenges
Port of Savannah: As one of the busiest ports in the U.S., it is the district’s economic engine. Labor disputes or shutdowns will have significant ripple effects on the regional and national economy.
Tourism & military bases: The district relies heavily on tourism, including historic Savannah and coastal islands. It also depends on military installations. These make the district sensitive to federal budget decisions and global economic shifts.
Workforce equity: While port-related companies have seen significant profits, workers continue to push for fair contracts and wage growth.

Rural & Urban Divide
Infrastructure gaps: Rural areas like Waycross and Jesup struggle with limited broadband access, healthcare, and modernized utilities. Urban centers like Savannah benefit from greater investment.
Income disparities: Median household income is about $66,773, but rural poverty rates stay higher, especially in Black and Hispanic communities.

Public Health & Safety
Opioid crisis: The district faces rising concerns about opioid addiction and overdose deaths. These issues are linked to broader border and drug trafficking policy debates.
Healthcare access: With large rural populations, residents often face limited access to hospitals, specialists, and preventive care, exacerbating health inequities.

Immigration & Border Policy
Ports of entry: Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Savannah’s port is a local issue. It is tied to national debates about border security and asylum processes. Yet, I will advocate for respectful and humane treatment of all people, ensuring due process during detainment.

Education
Head Start programs across the United States face an urgent need for consistent funding. They need expanded funding to overcome long-standing financial shortfalls. Current compensation remains inadequate. Investing more funds is essential. It will tackle severe staffing shortages driven by low wages and high turnover. It will also modernize outdated facilities.
